Introducing MetaMask Transaction Shield: Your Gateway to Enhanced Security
MetaMask is raising the bar for security with the launch of Transaction Shield, an exciting new premium subscription service designed to provide users with added protection in their cryptocurrency transactions. This innovative feature combines intelligent transaction protection with priority customer support, ensuring that your digital assets are always secure.
What is Transaction Shield?
Transaction Shield is an extension of MetaMask's robust security framework. This new offering guarantees subscribers coverage against transaction losses—up to $10,000 per month for any transaction deemed safe by MetaMask—bringing an extra layer of comfort for users operating in the fast-paced world of cryptocurrencies. For just $9.99 a month or $99 annually, subscribers can enjoy the following benefits:
- Transaction Protection: Enjoy peace of mind with protections that cover you against losses—up to $10,000 monthly, across up to 100 eligible transactions.
- 24/7 Priority Support: Gain priority access to expert support whenever you need assistance—day or night.
To help users get acquainted with this feature, a 14-day free trial is available. Those opting for the annual plan can also benefit from a $20 discount on the yearly fee. To read more about the terms of use and privacy details, check out the Transaction Shield Terms of Use and Privacy Notice.
How Transaction Protection Works
MetaMask's security stack works vigilantly to safeguard your assets. With infrastructure that conducts automated transaction simulations and rigorous safety checks on contracts, token behavior, and historical performance, the platform proactively seeks and blocks malicious domains and emerging threats in real-time. These protections contribute to an already safe environment for all MetaMask users.
A transaction passes through these stringent checks and is deemed safe, allowing subscribers of Transaction Shield to relax, knowing that any loss up to $10,000 during that transaction is covered. Users receive clear, in-app alerts indicating when a transaction is covered, specifically guarding against losses occurring at the moment of the transaction, and not before or after.

What is Covered?
Currently, Transaction Protection is available through the MetaMask Extension, with plans to introduce mobile support soon. It supports transactions on various popular networks, including Ethereum, Linea, Arbitrum, Avalanche, Optimism, Base, Polygon, BSC, and Sei. Eligible interactions include:
- DeFi swaps and lending: Token swaps on trusted applications like Uniswap or 1inch, and participating in lending or liquidity operations on protocols like Aave or Lido.
- NFT mints and sales: Minting or selling NFTs on established marketplaces such as OpenSea or Rarible.
- Airdrop claims: Claiming airdrops from verified smart contracts.
What Isn’t Covered?
While Transaction Shield offers extensive protections, it’s important to understand its limitations. Here are some scenarios that are NOT covered:
- Compromised Wallets: Losses arising from phishing attacks, malware incidents, leaked recovery phrases, or poor key storage.
- Speculative and Economic Losses: Losses that occur from transactions that function as expected but result in financial loss due to fluctuations in token valuation or liquidity.
- Protocol Exploits: Losses occurring from hacked or vulnerable DeFi protocols or smart contracts that fall outside MetaMask's purview.
What is the Claim Process?
Opening a claim is designed to be quick and user-friendly. Here’s how it works:
- Open a Claim: Navigate to the Transaction Shield section in the MetaMask Extension and submit the transaction details within 21 days of experiencing a loss.
- Follow the Process: Stay updated throughout the claim process via email notifications.
- Receive Your Funds: Upon approval, your assets will be reimbursed back to the specified wallet address. Most claims are processed within 15 business days and payments are made in mUSD based on the current market rate.

Early access to Transaction Shield is now live through the MetaMask Extension. Payment options include subscriptions with stablecoins such as mUSD, USDC, and USDT, along with credit or debit cards.
